About First Night Morris 31st year Celebration

First Night Morris is a Morristown tradition that has been going on for decades, but this year one of New Jersey’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations won’t look the same as COVID numbers continue to rise and the city makes changes and accommodations.

First Night Morris County marked its 31st year as the Mid-Atlantic’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration of the arts. The event brought art, film, music, comedy and family-friendly fun to Morris County NJ. The celebration was and is always sober, alcohol and substance-free.

During the event, First Night Morris County provided its attendees with outstanding value and innovative, diverse and world-class performances, ideal for all the participants regardless of age.

This year’s event saw the return of many exceptional artists.

And this was Morristown’s largest iteration since the pandemic, which forced First Night to go virtual two years ago and into hybrid mode last year.

With the artistic guidance provided by Dr. Lynn Siebert of Morris Arts, the program was well-balanced, offering numerous performance genre: theatre, music from around the globe, visual arts, children programs, world cultures, and so much more.

The President of First Night Morris County, Craig Schloser initially pegged the paying crowd at 2,000 based on previous years. But last minute sales pushed the total closer to over 3,000. Given the weather and the carefulness caused by COVID, Schloser was pleased by the turnout.

Participants reaching over 3,000 attended the fireworks shows, scheduled for 9:15 p.m. and again at midnight to officially ring in the new year.

The program featured such perennial favorites at pianist Rio Clemente, the Harmonium Choral Society and the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. Winard Harper and his Jazz Group and the Random Test Reggae Band got toes tapping. There was tap dancing, too, and plenty of crowd participation at Bollywood dance sessions.

The kids that were present were not left out. There was painting of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, Juggles the Clown, LEGO building and Dinoman.  Also, Mr Hypno introduced everyone to the power of suggestion.

A film fest offered 50 selections, with an on-demand option for later. The Muttville and Ginty sets were livestreamed.  A thousand people watched some portion of the festivities online, according to Schloser.

Positive Reactions From Participants

“This is a really good show!” shouted Katie, a little girl inside the Mayo Performing Arts Center watching Johnny Peers & the Muttville Comix, one of the cutest acts performed at the 31st annual First Night Morris County.

“What a great family night! Awesome shows and amazing fireworks. So much to do and not enough time to do it. They even have shuttles to take you around.” Said Ryan

Caroline said “Experienced this for the first time and absolutely loved it. The shuttle service really made it much more enjoyable. It was my first New Years Eve spent without my children since they were old enough to go to parties of their own and I wish I had made it a tradition with them. I will surely be making it a tradition going forward!”

Lori Wilson said “First Night Morris County has become a much-loved New Year’s Eve tradition for my husband and me, and this year’s performances did not disappoint!  I’m sure it takes the collaborative efforts of many individuals and groups to plan this event each year, and everyone’s tireless efforts are much-appreciated.  We love the variety and quality, often giving us opportunities to discover art forms unfamiliar to us, and artists acquire new fans as a result. Morristown hosts many great events throughout the year and this has become one of our favorites.”

David and Allison Nach of Bridgewater were eager for some public merriment after the long pandemic.

“We had to get out,” said Allison. “We’re not big party people, so this was perfect.”

“It’s just a mixture of events. You’re not stuck in one place,” David Nach said.

“It’s a nice alternative to overcrowded clubs and expensive restaurants,” added their friend, Bill Foley of Denville.

“There’s lots of entertainment for big and small,” chimed in Scotch Plains resident Susan Mayer, who brought her two teens. They all have been coming to First Night for years.

Maureen M. Miller, whose film was played after submission. Here’s what she had to say:”It was a great honor having my short film screened at the First Night Morris County Film Festival. Amazing to be part of such a wonderful family event and a fantastic way to start the New Year! This was a great experience and communication was excellent. Looking forward to submitting again. Thank you First Night Morris County Film Festival”
